The new musical Dark Ages are here
A popular music critic has a video where he reviews a compilation CD of pop music hits from the six years prior to 1973. He showed the playlist to two younger friends (ages 29 and 41) and they knew almost all of them. Music that was written decades before they were born.
He postulates: Create a similar length playlist of pop songs from 2020 - 2026, then time travel forward to 2079. Show the playlist to a 29 and a 41 year old. Will the recognize anywhere near all of them?
We suspect not, and he uses this little thought experiment to argue that we are in a musical dark age.
Perhaps it's just that the era of the late 60's and early 70's was a unique and special time when all the creative forces in the world of music reached a peak and produced an explosion of amazing music in many genres. No need to criticize the music of today, but feel glad that music recording technology let's us enjoy the awesome music from that special era.
