How revolutions succeed

A recent episode of Hidden Brain podcast discussed a somewhat surprising finding. Non-violent revolutions are twice as likely to succeed as violent ones.
Despite the fact that in popular imagination the word 'revolution' is usually associated with violent overthrow of a government, researchers found that isn't the case. There's a kind of mythology around violent revolutions: the Russian revolution, the American Revolution, the French Revolution, etc. that glamorizes the violent aspects.

The reason non-violence succeeds is pretty simple. Revolutions succeed when at least 3% of the population are actively involved. They start from the populace and must garner public support. Violent acts tend to turn people away, and even result in sympathy for a government that cracks down and provides stability and security.
