Ban smartphones in schools
I've been following the work of a social psychologist named Jonathan Haidt for about a year now. He's been researching the impact of smartphones on teen mental health. I admire how transparent he's been with his writing, how open he is to criticism, and how diligent in making sure his conclusions come directly from empirical data.
Up until now he's stuck to academic writing and being very scholarly. But recently he came out with a policy piece "Get Phones Out of Schools Now" that was published in the Atlantic. And it's a doozy. If you haven't been following this issue, or don't have a strong opinion about whether young people should take smartphones to school, you should read this article. With his characteristic care and thorough documentation he lays out a very compelling argument. Followed up with some practical, easy to implement solutions that schools could begin adopting today.
